I feel weird operating a blog at stuparker.tumblr.com now that Stu Parker has retired johngruber.tumblr.com and also gruber.staires.org, so I’m going to leave this here and continue writing at my regular spots. Feel free to follow me there or not.

Love y’all.

Reactions to Gruber: Thanks For All The Fish→

So long, Stu!

I doubt I’ll be updating “Reactions to Gruber” anymore. It was fun while it lasted. I appreciated and enjoyed the cheers (and the jeers) I got from everyone.

It was fun while it lasted, indeed.

The Brooks Review: That Clicking Sound→

My elegant box

I’m digging my new threads. This theme is a lightly tweaked version of the Elegant Box theme by the very talented Kyle Dreger.

Try using your j and k keys to jump from post to post. That’s a little ingredient I threw in.

(By which I mean crudely hacked some code I found online into this thing)

OK Edition: iMovie vs AVID studio→

Will:

I see smartphone cameras, combined with these touched based editing apps as the future of consumer video editing, and I want to find out what that future is like.

I love that attitude.

I’ve also downloaded iMovie for iOS and barely used it. Just once. I had the same idea: film my dog.

I’ll make a little short film this week too. I’m excited to try out the Vimeo app, which was recently updated. I’ll be doing it all on my phone — the same one I used to make Quarters.

Raging Thunderbolt: Monetization^2→

Hey Raging Thunderbolt!

I think you’re implying here that Gruber and Brooks are hypocrites because they’re not outraged by Twitter’s attempts to profit from their millions of users?

First of all, maybe they are. I know Brooks is very outspoken about preferring paid, non-creepy services. I wouldn’t be shocked if he suddenly quit Twitter over something like this.

(Of course I think that would be kind of silly.)

I’m not sure what Gruber’s position is.

My feeling about Twitter and privacy is this: I choose to have a public account through which I volunteer select information. I don’t assume anything on Twitter to be private, DMs excepted. And you can’t exactly violate the privacy of my public tweets.

I want my private communications and behaviors to be private and I understand my tweets are public. I assume it’s all grist for ads at this point, and I’m mostly at peace with that. But if other people aren’t? I respect that they value their privacy and I don’t assume it’s because of some inherent douchey bias.

Mou 0.7.1→

You guys are all using Markdown right? It’s so great. Mou is my favorite Markdown editor. I can’t recommend it enough for drafting posts and other writing or note-taking. More thoughts at the main blog.

And the void answers back

I’ve been reacting to y’all for a few months and now, finally, someone is reacting to me. I present: Reax to Jacobson’s reax to Parker’s Reax to Gruber. You nailed that title. Beautiful.

This makes me want to post more.

Great first reaction:

Weirdly enough for my first time doing this, I agree with Max. And Stu, I guess. I’m not sure about Gruber, but being this far out, I can’t see his opinion without binoculars.

Raging Thunderbolt: Eavesdropping→

ragingthunderbolt:

Yo, my BFFs Max and Will made a podcast together.

Since I’m an old fogey who has no idea how to listen to podcasts, I am having trouble accessing the direct download version. But I’m sure it’s worth a listen. Check it.

I think I’ve been Thunderbolted!!!

I’ve been too casually letting Dropbox host my podcast for me and I hit the bandwidth limit and so they suspended me!

Here’s an alt-link to download it. Sorry! Thanks.

Thanks Will for talking to me.

All the info can be found on the show page. We talk about all this stuff.

Thanks for the shout out, Raging Thunderbolt→

I’m kinda honored. Especially since you’re officially on top of the world.

Here you are replying to a reader:

Yes. Set up a tumblr. You can join our anti-Appleverse-verse or the burgeoning anti-anti-Appleverse-verse-verse (headed up by Will Kujawa and Max Jacobson).

I suppose I can bear that description. But since you linked to my main blog and not this one I guess maybe you’ve seen this post in which I say:

I’ve been reading some Apple-centric tech writers for a while and kind of want to branch out a little. I love guys like John Gruber, Marco Arment, and Dan Benjamin. Love ‘em. But a lot of people don’t. So I wanted to get to know why. So I’m talking to them.

That’s my perspective. I’m not trying to be anti-anything except the occasional weak argument. I’m here to chat and have my horizons broadened a little. Call that what you want. I’m happy to be grouped in with Will, tho. Maybe he’ll agree to do my podcast.

Raging Thunderbolt: "What is a conditional apology?"→

Seriously. What I found most curious was Siegler and Arrington’s repeated attention to the fact that Path gave an “unconditional apology”.

What is a conditional apology? Is that like saying “I’m sorry if I hurt you by punching you in the face” or “I’ll apologize only if you do too”? Who says that after grade school?

I think it’s fairly common for adults to try to weasel out of taking responsibility for things this way. There’s a great wikipedia page about the Non-apology apology.

Reactions to Gruber: Poor Violet Blue→

Only on the internet can something simple like a dumb goof from a female blogger turn into a huge vitriolic shit-flinging fest, and it’s entirely because of people like Shawn King who claims he doesn’t hate Violet Blue, just everything she does on the internet.

Get your facts straight. I don’t “hate” Violet Blue. I think she’s a bad journalist, an awful writer and a piss poor photographer. But there’s no hate.

So essentially everything that is Violet Blue’s public persona you hate, and you’d rather her not be on the internet at all? Got it, that doesn’t sound anything like hate to me! You’d swear it’s impossible to just ignore people you don’t like, you have to seek them out, repeatedly harass them over small issues, and argue about them on the internet. Yeah, that still doesn’t sound like hate…

I agree.

To me, the weirdest thing about this whole story is that both Gruber and Blue seemed to be making a pretty similar point about “Booth Babes”.
